clothing
even though material is created by machines, there are still a large amount of people we take for granted in the textile industry.
I have chosen the question clothing, because I am particularly interested in fashion and design. I am fascinated by the different textures and patterns in fashion photography and also the freedom that allows you to explore the many aspects of fashion, clothing and colours can portray a wide range of creativity and an eye for detail. I am going to explore the draping in clothing and close up fabrics, also the shapes it can create, I also like the silhouette and movement that clothes and light fabrics create.
What I want for this exam?
For this independent project I have chosen clothing, the reason for this is that I want to show the life of fabrics and the different shapes and silhouettes they can make, I also want to show the creative and technical way that many fabrics are made, for example a woven material has shapes and lines made from threads. In addition to this I want to show the other shapes made whilst a light fabric is draped and manipulated to make complicated and delicate lines.

Editing photographs
Artist 1- Alison Watts
The photographer I have chosen is Alison Watts, she is an artist that paints the many different ways fabric lays, and how it can be manipulated to create complex and interesting lines. I believe her work will influence me with the use of plain white fabrics and some contrasting colours to create harsh black lines.
My response to Alison watts
I took these photo under the influence of Alison watts, I focused on the lines and draping of the material, also how shadows are created. I like how there are lighters and more concentrated areas of white and contrasting lines and shadows, but I was disappointed with the concentration of shades, I will edit some of these photos to create more of an impact.
I like this photo the most because of the change in flowing fabric and the breaks on the material. I want to edit this photograph to make the force of the shadows more powerful and the white of the material pure.
Close up woven fabrics
At the start of this project I wanted to focus of close up textures, I like woven fabrics because you are able to see they way the material is made.
Alison Diaz
Allison Diaz's Collages From a "Haunted Mirror" (Below)
To link my second artist to my chosen theme I wanted to find a photographer that played with creating fabrics out of paper and pictures, the way these collages are made are that there are multiple pictures cut into strips and woven to create a final piece, I like the idea of this because it effectively show the link between close up fabrics and photography.

Analysis of photograph
I have chosen this certain photograph because of the many photographs that have been used, it creates and effect of a moving image and that the woman is moving across the page, you can also see that her expression changes as she moves, we see this with her eyes, as they are opened wide in excitement and then smirk whilst he mouth opens and she laughs, I particularly like the expression and emotion that is portrayed.
My response to Allison diaz
I decided to take these photographs in this style because I wanted to create contrasting final woven images, therefor the mixture of emotions and levels of brightness is vast and you can see the different photographs.
Woven pieces
Clothes, materials and fabrics are constructed by machines that are highly complex, the machines take the threads of material and weaves them together until a large piece of material is created, I wanted to apply this to my photographs by showing that even though the material is created by machines, there are still a large amount of people we take for granted in the textile industry.
I was able to create these woven pieces that replicate the construction of materials and fabrics by, firstly choosing two images that can be used to contrast against each other, I then sliced the two images and weaved them together until a final piece was created, I only chose to cut these photographs in straight lines because I wanted to familiarize myself with the construction, I also explored the different ways that a photograph can be completed.
